La FIFA anunció que si va la expansión a 48 equipos (a partir de 2026) en los mundiales de futbol.
Para realizarse de esta manera, se crearían 16 grupos de tres equipos cada uno que jugarían entre ellos. Luego de esta ronda pasarían los dos mejores de cada grupo a una segunda ronda con el tradicional formato de partidos play-off (el que pierde, se retira).
Con este nuevo formato la competencia tendría 80 partidos en vez de los 64 que vimos en Brasil.
Por supuesto que esto alteraría la cantidad de boletos de cada federación de la siguiente manera:
- Europa 16
- Conmebol 6,5
- África 9,5
- CONCACAF 6,5
- Asia 8,5
- Oceanía 1
